Introduction to the Roberts World Money website

Frequently Asked Questions

Embargoed Banknotes

What does it mean when on certain countries it says "embargoed"?

At the time of writing the following countries are deemed by the US Government to be excluded from trading with US companies. This is a broad brush that unfortunately, due to the way payment works, catches US business selling collectible items such as banknote, postcards, stamps, coins etc.

  • North Korea
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Iran
  • Cuba

This actually does not mean that I cannot sell them it is just that PayPal are not allowed to process payment for any order that mentions these countries. I can sell them, but the only form of payment I can accept at this time is check or money order (cash is acceptable, but you will send at your risk)

NB: If you purchase notes from South Sudan PayPal will hold the payment and investigate to make sure it is not Sudan and payment usually clears in 24/48 hours.

Real vs. Fun/Fantasy Banknotes

How does one know if the banknotes offered are the actual currency or not? Which notes are real and which are simply collector's [fantasy / fun] notes?

While we do try to label collectors' banknotes on our website, which are also called private issue, fantasy, fun and art notes, here is how you can differentiate between real currency and fun/art notes:

  • Fun/Art notes tend to be created for "fantasy" countries or regions where banknotes are not issued, such as: Antarctica, Arctic Territories and Marie Byrd Land.
  • There are fun/art notes that are created for countries with real currency. Some examples would include: Reunion, Panama and the new United States State Banknote series. The key here is price. Fantasy notes from these countries are far cheaper than real currency banknotes. A real Reunion note, for example, would cost thousands, whereas a fun/art note would be valued around $10 - $20.

Again, I would suggest you just contact me and ask if not sure. It can get confusing with these notes and with advent of polymer printing options being available for banknote artists, they are producing some amazing notes that are sometimes better than the notes produced by the big banknote printing companies.

Shipping

Do you ship internationally and what is the cost?

Yes and the regular shipping cost is $2.00

Do you send international orders with tracking?

Usually not, but I can, if specifically requested. There are two options:

  1. Registered Mail
  2. EMS (Express Mail Service)

Tracking on international mail, I am afraid, is not as good as it used to be here in the US. There are now a lot of problems with registered (trackable) mail. It is not handled and tracked as it used to be (where each Post Office employee used to be responsible for the item when they scanned it in) In the last 12 months there has been many reports of items going missing (as the post office employees know this is a more valuable package - because it is registered). As no one is accountable it can easily get "lost" which never seemed to happen when they were. FYI: The cost of registered mail is $15.00.

There is another system that is being promoted by the post office now (as it costs $50.00 I have a feeling this is why they are making registered less attractive as a safe form of international shipping) called EMS. However, though it has worked well for me, I have had a friend lose 5 of these last year and the Post Office here refused to pay him out the insurance, saying it was not lost in the US. So again not a good option in my opinion.

We have very limited options here for international shipping and I have actually found regular first class international mail to be the safest (albeit, no tracking).

In the last few years (since the recession) any mail that is registered seems to be a target for the postal workers here, and I started to lose so much registered mail (at $15 a time it was frustrating as the post office refused to do anything) therefore, with first class mail international in a regular envelope the lost rate has dropped dramatically, where as it is extremely rare for a package to not arrive.

What I can sometimes do, to limit exposure, is to break a big order into two or three packages. However, it is so rare to lose a package using just regular mail that this would be just in case.

I hope this helps with explaining international shipping. I apologize it is not a simple as it should be, but experience has shown that sending packages without tracking is the safest way to go, of course for some people they do like to know where there package is (when/if the post office do scan it) and I will always be happy to send registered, but again there is an extra cost of $15.00.

Zimbabwe Banknotes

I'm interested in purchasing Zimbabwe currency. My question to you is how does one know if the bills offered are the actual currency or not. Which notes are real and which are simply collector's [fantasy / fun] notes.

The Zimbabwe currency you are buying is genuine currency, albeit no longer used in that country. I think we find it hard here in the US to understand that other countries can change, revalue, or cease certain banknotes and just start issuing new ones, making the old banknotes obsolete. Some countries can change denomination, such as Suriname which went from gulden to the dollar), whereas in the countries such as the US, England, Australia and Canada, currency is good forever. However, in some countries, especially when inflation racked, they just stop using that money and issue new notes.

Various examples exist, such as Brazil, where they took current currency and over-stamped it with a new currency. In Zimbabwe, they printed new notes and even, at one stage, stopped using the bearer's checks they had produced - one being $500,000 and issued a 1 cent note).
